Valentine’s Day is known in many countries as the « Day of the Lovers ». The name is attributed to Bishop Valentin of Terni. He is said to have married bridal couples who were not allowed to enter into the holy covenant of marriage. Bishop Valentin is said to have given the couples flowers from his garden as a gift. Emperor Claudius II did not find this funny and had him beheaded on 14 February 269 AD.
The « Day of the Lovers » was later reanimated by the flower trade and the confectionery industry. Among all the little love surprises, the most popular gifts on Valentine’s Day are flowers, perfumes, and chocolates. Valentine’s Day cards are also very popular.
